Kate Beckinsales Shower Scene, Whiteout Highlight

Whiteout was bad. REALLY bad. It also had the worst ending of any movie with a ‘The End’ random ending moment. The one highlight of the film was uber-hot-mom Kate Beckinsale stripping down to show off her super hot bod. Its a shame its the only highlight in the film, check it out below. Whiteout is now on Bluray and DVD.

Synopsis; Antarctica.  At 120 degrees below zero, this is the most isolated place on earth. Home to one of the deadliest forces in the world the whiteout.  The ice has provided U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko (Beckinsale) with a perfect place to forget her troubled past and feel at peace, but in just three days she will be getting out. Each winter the station powers-down and the sun sets for several months. Soon nothing will be visible or traceable so when there is a sudden murder in her jurisdiction – the first homicide in Antartica – Stetko is quickly plunged into a shocking mystery.

When U.N. Special Agent Robert Pryce (Macht), is sent to monitor her investigation, the case takes a deadly twist and a 60-year-old secret is unearthed. As Stetko herself becomes a target, Pryce could prove to be a powerful ally but only if solving the murder is what he’s really after. With only days before the last plane out, Stetko must race to unravel the mystery or risk being stranded on the ice as darkness and the killer closes in.

Ray Winstone Interview, Edge of Darkness

Ray Winstone (“Beowulf”) stars opposite Mel Gibson in Martin Campbell’s new thriller, “Edge of Darkness.” The emotionally charged film, set at the intersection of politics and big business, tells the tale of Thomas Craven (Gibson), a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father.

When his only child, 24-year-old Emma (Bojana Novakovic), is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But Craven begins to suspect otherwise and embarks on a mission to uncover the truth. His investigation leads him into a dangerous world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder – and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh (Winstone), who has been sent in to clean up the evidence.

The award-winning British actor talked about what attracted him to the project, how fun it was to play his character, and the status of his upcoming film, “Cleo.” Here’s what he had to tell us:

Q: What attracted you to this project? Were you drawn to it because it was a story about characters that lose family and fight for justice?

RW: You look at the script first. If you love the script, and it just happens to be about that subject, the subject is not the thing you look at first. It’s the script.

Q: How much fun was it to play this character?

RW: It’s funny because the parts you really want to play are the emotional parts. I do anyway, personally. When I read the script, I didn’t have a lot of time to get my act together. With the help of Martin and Mel, I had to decide which way I was going to take it to play a man with no emotion who’s seen death and created death. I’ve met people like that, years ago, who’ve been through the second World War or people who were members of the SAS. They have these eyes that kind of burn into you and look at the wall behind you. You can’t tell them lies.

It’s all about decisions as an actor. But, to make a decision to play someone who had no emotion on the surface, that’s fun. Besides, going to work is fun anyway, especially when you’re sitting opposite someone like Mel or John Hurt. It’s always a blessing because you’re working with people who are talented and know their job and know their business.

Q: Is Steven Soderbergh’s Cleo still happening?

RW: I don’t know. It was going to go last year and I think Steven had another film to go and do. There was talk of it going this year but I haven’t heard anything more about it to be quite honest with you. It’d be great, dressing up in a toga and all that with Tony Curtis haircuts, singing rock n’ roll.

Q: Would it have been you singing?

RW: What? Do you want me to apologize for that? [Laughs] From a kid, I always wanted to be a singer. My balls dropped one day and that was it. My daughter’s a singer. She sings jazz and blues but I’m a frustrated singer really. I think I became an actor because I couldn’t sing. You play a different kind of music now. I’d love to do that.

Q: It’s not officially dead?

RW: I haven’t been told it’s dead. I haven’t been told when it’s going, but I’d love to do it. And, to get a chance to kiss Catherine Zeta-Jones? You know, that’s just making movies, isn’t it? That’s what I’m doing it for. I’d love to do the film. He’s a very, very clever boy and, if anyone can pull that off, he could.

“Edge of Darkness” opens in theaters on January 29th. Ray Winstone will also appear in several other films set for a 2010 release, among them the biographical drama “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” about musician Ian Dury; the thriller “13,” opposite Mickey Rourke; “London Boulevard,” based on the Ken Bruen novel; and the action adventure “Tracker” in which he plays a former Boer War guerilla.

Planet Hulk Movie Review

Marvel is going through something of a tentative renaissance at the moment.  They burst onto the film scene with Iron Man, their first ever self-produced movie, in 2008.  It seemed almost a revelation at the time – people who make great comic books will make great comic book movies.  And yet with the current economic situation hitting Hollywood especially hard (Universal just got sold to Comcast Cable for Christ’s sake), Marvel is wisely taking things a bit slow, putting out a film per year.  Excitement is still high though, and those films are planned out through the next five years or so.

So to carry us through the harsh winter months between big-budget superhero summer extravaganzas, Marvel has been kicking up it’s direct-to-DVD animated film production.  The king of these releases so far is clearly the Hulk, with Hulk vs. Thor and Hulk vs. Wolverine released together last year, the green machine’s giving it another go with Planet Hulk.

Throughout his history as a character, the Hulk has always been a giant angry unstoppable thorn in the rest of the Marvel Universe’s side.  In Planet Hulk, based on the comic arc of the same name, Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, and Dr. Strange launch the Hulk into space, destined for a hospitable but deserted world where he might find peace from his rage.  Veering off course though, the Hulk’s ship crashes on a different, more conflict-ridden planet.  Taken into slavery and forced to battle as a gladiator, some believe that the Hulk is the planet’s savior, but the emperor wants him dead.

Just from the description, it’s apparent that Planet Hulk follows a very predictable Spartacus-esque plot.  There’s not a single scene in the movie where you don’t know exactly what’s going to happen.  In the extensive and rather excellent special features, the filmmakers discuss how they had to trim down the development of the side characters to focus on the Hulk and to fit into the 81-minute runtime.  But from these same interviews, one gets the impression that these side characters were the best part of the story arc to begin with.  Sure, we get a slightly more articulate Hulk who progresses (in extremely predictable ways) as a character, but who really wants that?  All the scenes spent wrestling with newfound emotions rob us of valuable “Hulk smash” time, of which we get precious little already.

Speaking of those special features though, there’s a lot of them, and they seem to come in pairs.  The disc has two commentary tracks, two excellent mini-documentaries (one on the making of the film and one on the story background for the comic arc), two short “motion comics” (one of Spider Woman, which is pretty decent, and one of The Astonishing X-Men, which is less impressive), and two music videos based on those motion comics.  Plus, there’s the “Wolverine vs. Hulk” episode of the televised animated series Wolverine and the X-Men (not to be confused with the feature-length animated Hulk vs. Wolverine) and a clip from Thor: Tales of Asgard.

As if that wasn’t enough, Marvel and Lionsgate have had the good sense to include a second disc, from which you can download a digital copy of Planet Hulk onto your Mac or PC.  This is a well-thought-out step forward for film distribution in a market where DVDs and other tangible media may soon be obsolete.

While Planet Hulk may not be groundbreaking cinema, the filmmakers do take advantage of their direct-to-DVD format with a bit more blood, a bit more brutality, and a bit more daring than they could get away with on a television series.  For Hulk fans and those suffering from the drought of live-action Marvel flicks, Planet Hulk is certainly worth checking out.

Avatar Breaks World Box Office Record

This comes as really no shock but Avatar has just broken the world wide box office record having crossed the $1.292 billion dollar mark as of Sunday according to the Hollywood Reporter. Titanic another film done by James Cameron had held the record at $1.242billion and I am sure Cameron takes alot of pride from not just setting the record with Titanic but then beating it with Avatar.

It is worth noting however that 3D ticket prices helped Avatar to climb to #1 in such record timing and if you actually account for inflation Gone With The Wind is still the #1 movie. If we look at actual ticket sales vs Box Office it even gets muddier as John Campea points out Star Wars sold more TICKETS then Avatar. That said… the numbers are what they are and Avatar is the first to hit $1.29 billion breaking the old record by $50million.

Martin Campbell Interview, Edge of Darkness

MoviesOnline caught up recently with director Martin Campbell who spoke with us in Los Angeles about his new thriller, “Edge of Darkness,” starring Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone and Danny Huston. The film is a remake of Campbell’s original BBC mini-series about a Boston homicide detective, Thomas Craven, who sets out to solve the mystery behind his daughter’s violent death. In the process, he uncovers a vast conspiracy at the highest levels of our government.

For Campbell, revisiting the film’s characters and themes after two decades presented an exciting challenge. “Just as it did years ago, I thought that the heartfelt story of a man losing his daughter, and going off after revenge, could just really capture an audience today.”

The New Zealand native most recently directed the hugely successful James Bond adventure “Casino Royale,” that introduced Daniel Craig in the role of Bond. Prior to that, he re-teamed with Antonio Banderas on “The Legend of Zorro,” the sequel to their 1998 hit “The Mask of Zorro,” which starred Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones and earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.

Martin Campbell is a terrific director and we really appreciated his time. Here’s more of what he had to tell us about his suspenseful new film:

Q: What were your preconceptions when you saw the screenplay and how closely do these sync up?

MC: I think very closely. There’s not a great deal of action in it, but we designed the action so rather like a car crash, most violent acts come out of nowhere. They simply happen in the blink of an eye. You never quite know exactly what happened and that was the principal of this, really. So that was a decision that we took.

Q: Did this movie remake feel familiar or totally new?

MC: Well, like Mel approached the acting, he didn’t watch the series and neither did I. I simply forgot the series and treated it as a new movie. I think it was the only way to go about it.

Q: Is it more political thriller than film noir?

MC: No, I think it’s much more about loss. It’s about grief and it’s about retribution. It’s all of those things. I think the political story is the least interesting of the elements in the film.

Q: Who came up with the last scene? Was it Bill Monahan, the screenwriter?

MC: Oddly enough, we had a slightly different ending to the film and it just wasn’t comfortable. It didn’t work and in fact Mel said to me, “This is not working. It doesn’t feel right” and so forth. We discussed it and he said to me, “Well, why don’t we put it in the hospital, in the hospital corridor?” That’s precisely what we did, so that’s where that came from. There’s also another scene which is, I think, one of the best scenes in the movie which is the flashback scene to the little girl and the shaving scene. Well, I have to say that was entirely Mel’s idea. It wasn’t mine and that was a scene that Mel improvised with the little girl. We shot it in two or three hours, I think. It’s probably my favorite scene in the movie, or certainly one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

Q: Regardless of whether you revisited the series or not, were you hesitant to revisit a past success?

MC: No, it all depended on the script. The idea of a father who’s lost his only daughter and sets out on a voyage of discovery, I always thought that was a great story. To be honest, it was simply a matter of the script coming right. Andrew Bovell did a terrific job, the first writer, but Bill Monahan took it to the finish line. I could put the series out of my mind and it was a very good script so I had no hesitation.

“Edge of Darkness” opens in theaters on January 29th.
